Between Eye Rolls and Belly Laughs: Embracing April Fools

As I think about this April Fools' Day, my face contorts, and I force the biggest eye roll I can muster. Doesn't it feel like it's already been two months of pranks and fools? I want the world to pause, the shenanigans to stop, and the fools (other than real circus clowns and jesters) to gain critical thinking skills.

But in equal measure, I can't forget the other part of me that recognizes how crucial humor is for health. Indeed, it's vital for emotional, physical, and emotional health. Laughter is good medicine.

I wondered about April Fools Days and took a dive into its origin.

And guess what?

The origin of April Fool's Day is as elusive as a slow leak in a tire. Some historians wink at France in the 1500s, where Poisson d'avril (April fish – where fishy paper cut-outs are sneakily pinned on unsuspecting backs) to Scotland's two-day tease involving "hunting the gowk" (cuckoo) and delivering phony errands.

But it doesn't stop there; India's Holi festival, to the Nordic countries, where media and even serious folks join in the fun with hoax headlines—get in on the act.

The spirit of April Fool's is actually a global giggle.

It's a beautiful thing.

A world bonded by belly laughs, a global unity in laughter that transcends borders and cultures.

Classic gags have always had a home in our hearts—think whoopee cushions strategically placed on seats or good-humored computer pranks like switching the language settings (oh, the delightful confusion!). As a kid, the one joke I found the funniest was to replace the icing between Oreos with toothpaste.

The things kids do...

One year, I draped our store mannequin in beautiful vintage clothes and positioned her looking at a shelf of candles. All day, customers complimented the "contemplative, beautifully dressed customer." We shared a chuckle once the joke was up.

And that's the point, isn't it, a smile instead of a frown?

There's a unique joy in planning a prank that ends in a smile, perhaps leaving a mystery gift (a little potted plant or a book you adore) with a note that brings a tidal wave of joy. A little laughter can be a beacon of light, especially when times feel like you're paddling upstream without an oar. So, let's plan some pranks and spread some joy!

So, dust off your trickster's hat, polish those jesting gems, and remember, in our world of heartfelt connections, the best pranks always come with an extra-large side of kindness.

Stay whimsical, my friends, and let's make this April Fool's Day a day full of sweet surprises and cheerful chuckles!

Warm giggles, sassy winks, and a huge, funny-looking eye roll.
